Since its establishment in 1981, the Schiedam Windmills Foundation has been dedicated to the preservation and management of the windmill heritage in Schiedam.
The objectives of the Foundation are:
• Maintaining and preserving the windmills
• Keeping the windmills in operation, caring for their management
• Stimulating interest in the windmills
• Supporting the Schiedam Windmills Volunteers Society
• Advising third parties on the preservation and management of windmills outside Schiedam
• Developing and coordinating activities, such as the Schiedam programme for National Windmills Day
In the first period after the establishment of the Foundation much attention has been paid to preservation and restoration work. The Restoration Workshop Schiedam and a group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers have played an important role in these activities. In the past years two large projects have been completed: the rebuilding of windmill De Palmboom (The Palm Tree) and the complete restoration of windmill De Walvisch (The Whale), which was badly damaged by fire in 1996.

In 1999 the Schiedam Windmills Foundation developed a “vision for the future”. Key issues are as follows: improving the view along the windmill route, intensifying the cooperation in the touristic and recreational fields, enhancing public interest for the windmills and consolidating the position of the windmill volunteers.

To conclude, the foundation is about to start with two new ambitious projects, namely the rebuilding of windmill De Kameel (The Camel) and the complete restoration of the Babbersmolen (The Babbers windmill), a dismantled polder mill situated along the Poldervaart.
