As long as the windmills in Schiedam exist, they require maintenance. Year after year the giants of Schiedam suffer from changing weather conditions. Also turning and grinding takes a heavy toll. Volunteer millers carry out most of the daily maintenance. This concerns tasks such as painting and tarring the railing. Substantial maintenance work is contracted out, usually to the Restoration Workshop Schiedam. Replacing the railing supports is an example of substantial maintenance work. Also checking the brickwork falls under this type of work. As an example windmill De Vrijheid (The Freedom) can be mentioned. Rainwater penetrates the brickwork, which causes wood, which has been fixed in the brickwork, to rot. It is essential that action is taken as early as possible. The Schiedam Windmills
Foundation gives high priority to maintenance work. It prevents deterioration
and the necessity to carry out costly restorations. Maintenance and restorations
involve a lot of money. Fortunately the Foundation obtains subsidies from
the Ministry of Culture for part of this work. Also funding from the private
sector is a possibility. In addition the dedication of volunteers
and members is of vital importance.
